1336 hrs: On September 17th, at approximately 1330 hours, Engines 54 and 57, Tower 51 with Aerial Tower 5 and the 5th Battalion were dispatched to a structure fire at 809 E 12th St. Upon Engine 54's arrival, they found a 2-story taxpayer with heavy smoke from the second floor. Battalion 5 arrived and requested the Working Fire response, adding Engine 31 and Battalion 3 as RIT, and Squad 9. Two lines were stretched, 1 to the fire building and one to the exposure for possible extension. None was found. All searches were clear and negative. Roof was ventilated. All companies were put to work. Companies cleared the scene in about 90 minutes. Cause is still under investigation at this time.

2144 hrs: Tower 37 was returning from an EMS call in limited service with two personnel, when they came across a fully-involved vehicle fire. The sole occupant escaped unharmed, but was very distraught. While waiting for Engine 32 who was on the far southeast side of town, but was still the closest available engine, the crew attempted extinguishment with pump cans and ABC extinguishers. Engine 32 arrived, dropped a preconnect and made quick work of the fire.

1117 hrs: Tower 94 was dispatched to Terminal A for 2 people stuck in Freight Elevator 4 between the Lower Level and the First Floor. The power was shut off and locked out. The Chicago Box was opened and door keys used to try and open the door, without success. The crew then utilized the irons to force open the door, freeing the two very grateful occupants. A civilian submitted these cell phone photos to the fire department.

1314 hrs: Riverwoods Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1561 Town Drive. Upon Engine 52's arrival, a 1-story single-family dwelling was well involved in fire with an exposure in Division B, 1565 Town. The officer of Engine 52 ordered the company to dump the tank with the deck gun and had Engine 53 to assist with securing water. Engine 52 had an issue with the deck gun, so the crew lead out a 2.5 instead. Upon his arrival, Battalion 5 ordered duel 2.5s dropped to attack both structures which were well involved at this point. Aerial Tower 5 had the roof. Both structures were vacant and 1561 had burned previously on C-Shift 3 weeks ago.

1906 hrs: Riverwoods was kept busy through the evening when a regulator on a gas main malfunctioned causing over pressurized gas to flow into homes when appliances were used. Several different fires were fought at once. Extensive mutual aid was summoned to extinguish the fires. The majority of the fires were located in Engine 55's still. Ten different fires were fought in a period of six hours.

0213 hrs: Engines 55, 32 and 53 (RIT) with Aerial Tower 5 and Tower 37 and Squad 9 responded to a fire in the 500 blk of North Fairfield. Engine 55 arrived with smoke and flames showing from a 1.5 story cape cod. Two lines were stretched, searches were conducted and clear. Fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. Companies were on the scene overhauling and picking up for approximately an hour.

1019 hrs: Engines 57, 31, 54 (RIT), Towers 51 and 37, and Squad 9 responded to a structure fire in the 100 blk of West Southwest Highway . Fire was in the rear of a 1 story single family dwelling on a slab. The fire originated on the rear wall of the house, and burned through to the interior, igniting a small kitchen fire. Engine 57 was able to extinguish one line. The Working Fire response was held

MUTUAL AID STRUCTURE FIRE: Engine 441 and Tower 93 assisted Rochelle Heights Fire Department with a 3-Alarm fire at Dappers Restaurant. Companies operated in a defensive stance after the second floor flashed over while companies were attempting to reach the seat of the fire. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down, companies were allowed back in.

On February 10, 2013, Engine 91, HIT Squad 5 with Battalions 5 and 9 were dispatched for an Odor Investigation. Dispatch advised the responding companies that there were people feeling ill and short of breath on scene. And that a reddish cloud was coming from the neighbor's garage at 349 Main St. Upon arrival, the initial companies spoke with the callers and found that the house was vacant, but known to have unknown chemicals in the garage. The reddish cloud was confirmed. This prompted Battalion 9 to upgrade to a Level II Haz-Mat response and requested a full structure response. Additional hazardous materials teams were summoned from Lego Township and Westbrick FDs.
Teams made 3 entries into the Hot Zone, using Level A suits. Each entry had a specific purpose. The first, by HIT Squad 5, was to identify the chemical, Red Fuming Nitric Acid. The second, made by Engine 52, entry neutralized and contained the spill. The final entry, made by Westbrick Haz-Mat 4, was to pack the material into a containment drum. At approximately 1200 hours, Engines 91 and 92, Tower 93 and Battalion 9 from Johnstown; along with Engine 54 and Battalion 5 responded to 547 State St in Johnstown for a reported structure fire. Upon Engine 91's arrival, they reported smoke showing from the rear of a 1 story ranch. Engine 91 went in service with a preconnect, to the rear and found what appeared to be an exterior fire. Engine 92 secured a water supply and lead-out a second line to the interior and found minor extension into the home's interior. Tower 93 took to a primary search and ventilation operations. Engine 54 from Riverwoods was the RIT.
All searches turned up negative and the fire was placed under control within fifteen minutes. Companies would remain on the scene for another 45 minutes or so performing overhaul and chasing hotspots.

At approximately 1850 hrs, Oakwood was dispatched to a smell of smoke in an apartment building on the northwest side of town. Dispatch upgraded the alarm with companies en route due to multiple calls. Engine 82 reported on scene with smoke from the 2nd and 3rd floors with people in the windows on both floors.
Eighty-twos went to work, securing their own water and stretching a line up the center stairwell, while Snorkel 84 started throwing ground ladders and plucked 2 civilians out of the building. The fire was on the 3rd floor. Engine 92 arrived and stretched a second line from the wye in the stairwell. Quint 417 arrived and was assigned vertical vent. Engine 11 was assigned to RIT with Battalion 7. Battalion 8 was in command. Tower 7 was special called and conducted the primary search. Both victims were treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation. The fire apartment was empty at the time. The fire appears to have started in the dining room.
